AOLiveMC11: Hello everyone!!
AOLiveMC11: Tonight, we are being joined Live by Adam Yauch!!
AOLiveMC11: We all know him from the Beastie Boys, and we're happy to have him here!
ErinLlVE: Adam will be talking to us about the new Beasties DVD and vinyl set --
ErinLlVE: be sure to ask him for all the details.
SteveChristo84: (1) This is HAL9000 reporting live from the field...
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Howdy, parders out there in TV land!
BeastieBoysLlVE: (pardners)
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: There's 18 videos on it...
Question: What can we expect to see on the DVD?
BeastieBoysLlVE: the DVD that is.
BeastieBoysLlVE: There's outtake footage and remixes and still photographs...
BeastieBoysLlVE: storyboards.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Generally things related to the videos
BeastieBoysLlVE: that are included.
Question: Hi Adam :-)
Question: My question is... how long till the Beastie Boys drop some new stuff
Question: on us fans? I am patiently waiting for a new cd to get me and my 15
Question: closest friends!
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Nice to hear that you're waiting for it.
BeastieBoysLlVE: We're on vacation right now,
BeastieBoysLlVE: we're taking a little break for a bit.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Maybe at some point in the not-too-distant future.
Question: You don't just stick to one style of music. What is your favorite type?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I don't really have a favorite type of music
BeastieBoysLlVE: it just depends on what mood I'm in.
BeastieBoysLlVE: That determines what I listen to.
Question: what made you guys decide to do a full rap album (licensed to ill)
Question: instead of your punk roots?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: We had been listening to
BeastieBoysLlVE: a lot of hiphop at the time.
BeastieBoysLlVE: We started working on some rap music
BeastieBoysLlVE: in the studio..
BeastieBoysLlVE: and we just enjoyed doing that,
BeastieBoysLlVE: so we kept going in that direction.
Question: How long does it usually take you to write songs? Do you write them
Question: together or do you write some, then pass it on?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Some of the stuff we write
BeastieBoysLlVE: together and some we write individually.
BeastieBoysLlVE: There isn't really one set way
BeastieBoysLlVE: that we work on music.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Sometimes one of us will start out with an idea,
BeastieBoysLlVE: and the rest of us will expand on it.
BeastieBoysLlVE: And so forth.
Question: are u scared of the fans sometimes? Some can get really crazy
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: One time we were in Atlanta...
BeastieBoysLlVE: I think it was Atlanta...
BeastieBoysLlVE: some huge giant guy jumped off the
BeastieBoysLlVE: balcony and he looked like he was gonna hug me.
BeastieBoysLlVE: I ran away because I was scared!
Question: What inspired you to write Boomin' Granny?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I wish I was the one
BeastieBoysLlVE: inspired to write that, but that
BeastieBoysLlVE: was actually Mike and Adam Horowitz.
BeastieBoysLlVE: But perhaps they were inspired
BeastieBoysLlVE: by seeing old women shopping
BeastieBoysLlVE: in the supermarket.
Question: How is Mike D's Leg?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I think it's doing a lot better...
BeastieBoysLlVE: but it was his shoulder.
Question: Mr Adam Yauch, I love your DVD, I was wondering how you got Madlib
Question: and Peanut Butter Wolf to remix tracks. are you friends with these
Question: westcoast underground talents?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Actually there's a guy named Tick...
BeastieBoysLlVE: over at the Grand Royal who's friends
BeastieBoysLlVE: with most of the guys
BeastieBoysLlVE: who did the remixes.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Tick really helped to pull together
BeastieBoysLlVE: that end of things.
Question: Are you planning on relaesing a VHS verison of the Anthology?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: We've discussed it...
BeastieBoysLlVE: but we wouldn't feasibly be able
BeastieBoysLlVE: to put any of the extra features
BeastieBoysLlVE: into the VHS version...
BeastieBoysLlVE: we could run the videos in sequence
BeastieBoysLlVE: with just the stereo audio,
BeastieBoysLlVE: but we wouldn't be able to include
BeastieBoysLlVE: any of the stills, remixes, or outtakes footage.
BeastieBoysLlVE: So in answer to your question,
BeastieBoysLlVE: we may do that, but it definitely
BeastieBoysLlVE: won't be the same as the DVD
BeastieBoysLlVE: because the format of VHS
BeastieBoysLlVE: doesn't allow for the same
BeastieBoysLlVE: type of interactivity.
Question: So if the Beasties DVD is "likely the third greatest DVD of all time,"
Question: what are the first two?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: The answer is
BeastieBoysLlVE: I don't know.
Question: The DVD comp. is great, but why wasn't the infomercial included?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: We only put things on the DVD
BeastieBoysLlVE: that were directly related to the specific
BeastieBoysLlVE: videos that were picked to be on it,
BeastieBoysLlVE: and that didn't have any direct tie-in.
Question: how did you guys feel when you first hit top?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Weird.
Question: who were some of your mentors in the business. when you first started
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Bad Brains
BeastieBoysLlVE: and Minor Threat
BeastieBoysLlVE: The Clash
BeastieBoysLlVE: Bob Marley and the Wailers
BeastieBoysLlVE: Stimulators
BeastieBoysLlVE: Stiff Little Fingers
BeastieBoysLlVE: Undertones
BeastieBoysLlVE: Funky Four Plus One
BeastieBoysLlVE: Spoonie G
BeastieBoysLlVE: etc.
Question: The DVD is incredible. What was the most fun part about putting it
Question: together?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Finishing it.
BeastieBoysLlVE: It was a long process...
BeastieBoysLlVE: actually getting it all to work
BeastieBoysLlVE: It was nice to see it all
BeastieBoysLlVE: finally in one piece, functioning.
Question: How does it feel to be stepping into another dimension of
Question: technology with the new DVD considering you were putting stuff
Question: out on records in the 80s?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: It's always interesting to see
BeastieBoysLlVE: what kind of artistic expression
BeastieBoysLlVE: comes out of new technology,
BeastieBoysLlVE: and it will be interesting to see
BeastieBoysLlVE: what people decide to make
BeastieBoysLlVE: with what's available with DVD's.
Question: Hey Adam, I recall you did a film back in the late 80's called "Lost
Question: Angels". This film I always liked. I'm glad the Beasties are still
Question: around-but are you still into acting?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Oh no, that's Adam Horovitz.
Question: Why did you decide to censor the videos on the DVD Anthology?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: Basically, the way that the videos
BeastieBoysLlVE: were made, they were already censored
BeastieBoysLlVE: in order to be aired on TV.
BeastieBoysLlVE: So we decided to keep them that way.
BeastieBoysLlVE: And then I decided to censor the remixes also
BeastieBoysLlVE: so that everything would be the same
BeastieBoysLlVE: and also so that it would be
BeastieBoysLlVE: able to be seen by a wider audience.
Question: How do you think you guys have matured in the 15+ years you've been
Question: together? Was that what you were trying to show with the Anthology?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I'm not sure how or in what
BeastieBoysLlVE: ways things have changed over the last
BeastieBoysLlVE: close to twenty years that the
BeastieBoysLlVE: band has been together...
BeastieBoysLlVE: it wasn't really the intention of
BeastieBoysLlVE: putting together the anthology.
BeastieBoysLlVE: There's an answer to that question
BeastieBoysLlVE: and it's probably in there somewhere.
Question: Hey Adam, let my first say how much I love the BBoys, and I want to
Question: ask, How are Kate and John doing? I haven't heard much about either
Question: of them since Lucious Jackson broke up.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: They're both doing really
BeastieBoysLlVE: well, I just saw both of them
BeastieBoysLlVE: recently with the conjunction
BeastieBoysLlVE: of the final release of the anthology.
BeastieBoysLlVE: The final box set version of the anthology.
BeastieBoysLlVE: We did a photo show and a gallery,
BeastieBoysLlVE: and both Kate and John were there.
ErinLlVE: When can we expect the next
ErinLlVE: Tibetan Freedom Concert?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: We're working on some plans right now...
BeastieBoysLlVE: I'm not exactly sure when, but
BeastieBoysLlVE: hopefully we'll have something
BeastieBoysLlVE: going on in the spring.
ErinLlVE: How did you get involved in the cause for Tibet?
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I think that thing that
BeastieBoysLlVE: most struck me about the Tibet
BeastieBoysLlVE: struggle is that it's based on non-violence.
BeastieBoysLlVE: And that got me interested enough
BeastieBoysLlVE: to find out more.
Question: Are you glad to be able to take time off since you had been
Question: planning a tour? You are amazing by the way dude...perhaps it
Question: was a blessing in disguise since RAGE broke up
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I wouldn't exactly say glad...
BeastieBoysLlVE: but I certainly don't mind having a little break.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Adam Yauch: I'm glad to hear that people were asking
BeastieBoysLlVE: questions about the Tibet struggle because
BeastieBoysLlVE: the situation there is getting more and more
BeastieBoysLlVE: (increasingly) bad.
BeastieBoysLlVE: It would be great if more people
BeastieBoysLlVE: were interested in getting involved
BeastieBoysLlVE: in helping with the Tibet struggle.
BeastieBoysLlVE: People can check out the Beastie Boys nonprofit organization
BeastieBoysLlVE: which is called Milarepa
BeastieBoysLlVE: at milarepa.org
BeastieBoysLlVE: or they can check out Students for a Free Tibet
BeastieBoysLlVE: I'm not sure what their website is,
BeastieBoysLlVE: but there's probably a link
BeastieBoysLlVE: at milarepa.org
BeastieBoysLlVE: Hopefully Tibet can gain its freedom
BeastieBoysLlVE: in the not-too-distant future
BeastieBoysLlVE: if a lot of people speak out.
BeastieBoysLlVE: Thank you very much for your time.
ErinLlVE: Thank you Adam!
