Adam Horovitz on Eminem

The Beastie Boys, one of the pioneering bands of rap-rock, opened the doorfor white boys to enter into the world of hip-hop. However, Beastie Boy Adam"Ad-Rock" Horovitz doesn't approve of his group's heir apparent, Eminem.

Eminem received a lot of flak leading up to the Grammy Awards for his lyrics. Horovitz told LAUNCH he doesn't know where Eminem is coming from. "Well I mean,I think that it's pretty embarrassing for someone to go and say, 'This is myFirst Amendment...this is my right as an American citizen to be ignorant andhomophobic and sexist.' It's like, OK, if that's who you are and that's whatyou want to be, well I don't want to listen to you. I could give a shit. Ifsomeone is saying some homophobic lyrics, I don't want to listen to it, I don'twant to know about it. That's my First Amendment right. I don't give a shit. Thenhe goes on stage with Elton John, and he said, 'I didn't know Elton John was gay? I wouldn't have did it.' That's what I heard he said...I don't understand wherepeople's heads are at."

In the '80s, the Beasties were called misogynistic, a term that many use to describeEminem. Horovitz said he doesn't listen to a lot of today's popular music--he prefersto write, especially for his side project BS2000 with Beastie Boys drummer Amery "AWOL"Smith. The project's Simply Mortified is in stores now.
