John Nau Born -1941- in Seattle, Washington, USA. After high School-1959- John joined the Army where he was trained as a photographer. He was stationed outside of Verona, Italy for 30 months. Back in the US John attended Stockton Junior College in California for the most of 2 years. He then worked in Alaska for a salmon season and then made his way back to Europe where he stayed in Spain for 2 years. Returning to the US he worked 6 months as a warehouseman in Seattle and then became a merchant seaman. First to Alaska supporting an oil searching rig. Then returning to Seattle he decided that New York would be his home port, giving him the opportunity to see more of Europe. When this did not pan out he went to San Francisco where he began shipping out to Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippine Islands. After 2 years he had saved enough to return to Europe and the island of Mallorca, Spain. After a year and a half he moved to Sweden and married. Here he took up photography as a hobby. To earn a living he was a printer. 1980 he married for the second time which resulted in 3 children. For the most part he photographed his children. In 1986 he turned pro working on a freelance basis for union magazines, newspapers and federal agencies. 1989 he published a book on copper roofers work and environment. Not having any close relation to any journalist he decided to try journalism combined with photography which worked for a while although he soon realised that he would have to choose one or the other. Choosing photography was easy but 1990 the nations economy collapsed, as did his marrage, so in 1991 he worked on and off as a photographer but mainly as a printer. A few years later he began showing his work at exhibitions, working mainly with his own projects which he felt gave a larger portion of freedom. He uses the NOW Gallery on the web and exhibits his work together with other artists within Stockholm County. Having become a pensioner he continues shooting, feeling that more and more having been influenced by English photographers. | ||||
