PLEASE keep a copy of this message - maybe print one out and
stash it in a safe place - for future reference. It contains
important information that you may need now and in future.
NOTE! Only subscribed tabletweaving members can post email messages to Tabletweaving.
The following areas are covered in this message:
I. Ground Rules - How TabletWeaving will be managed, including what is considered appropriate message content and actions on TabletWeaving list, and what is not.
II. Using the List - How to subscribe, unsubscribe, choose a digest version, send e-mail messages to the list, communicate with the list computer, and communicate with the list owner.
III. Advanced tips - Some minutia for those who like to do special things with their computer.
IV. Archives - How to get old mail digests
The TabletWeaving list is a Majordomo mailing list for people with a special interest in tablet weaving -- beginners to advanced, historical and contemporary. We expect to have tablet weavers from all over the world taking part on the TabletWeaving mailing list. We recognize that some people pay quite a bit of money for access and e-mail. For that reason please keep discussions close to the subject of tablet weaving. There are other lists for other aspects of fiber arts and crafts. See, for example http://www.rbparker.com/ListOfLists
TabletWeaving is NOT intended to be a list for personal chat; that's what private e-mail is about. However, we wish to encourage a warm, group-of-friends ambience on TabletWeaving, so your list owner will be forgiving of slightly off-topic mail -- up to a point at least.
When you first subscribe, please introduce yourself and describe your tablet weaving interests and experience. Also, please feel free to ask questions at any time.
If you think a given message is not suitable in some way,
please send PRIVATE e-mail to the person who sent the mail,
with a cc: to the list owner at:
Don't take up everyone's time by sending such mail to the whole list. If the list owner thinks that there is sufficient objection by list subscribers, he will contact the offending person privately to see what can be done to help the situation.
Copyright Note: Please do not post any material from copyrighted sources to the TabletWeaving mailing list, unless you own the copyright or have been given specific permission to post it by the copyright owner. Please indicate that permission has been given and give appropriate credit to the copyright holder. The copyright on original list postings belongs to the individual, original poster, and is created as soon as the material is written. In other words, a copyright exists whether or not a formal registration of the copyright is made. With one exception, no copyright claim to any material posted by list subscribers is made by the list owner nor crafter.org. The copyright to the digests of the list mail is vested in the list owner. Do not re-post material appearing on TabletWeaving elsewhere, or publish in any form (electronic or otherwise), unless you have contacted the person providing it and have been given permission to do so. That means the sender for individual messages or the list owner owner-tabletweaving@crafter.org for the digest
For the time being, low key listings of items for sale pertaining to tablet weaving will be allowed from individuals. Just an occasional line or two, without prices. In the Subject: begin with the words For Sale, so that members who don't want to see that mail can filter them out. Commercial providers can mention their products IN BRIEF in their signature, but sales contacts should be strictly by private mail. Satisfied (or dissatisfied) customers should feel free to make comments about commercial suppliers for the edification of all.
Subscribers to TabletWeaving who send messages contrary to the above guidelines of will be gently reminded by e-mail, and will be unsubscribed from the TabletWeaving lists if they continue to break the rules.
Please use a signature block with your REAL name in it as well as your e-mail address. You need not use your full name. For example Ron Parker is just fine for Ronald Bruce Parker. It would also be nice to give some idea of where you live (at least which state or country). Don't make your signature too huge. AOL does not provide for a signature, but you can insert one by typing or cut and paste. Please include your geographic location as specifically as you feel comfortable with.
If you use a Reply to: function with your mail reader, the message will go to the whole list automatically. If the message is not of general interest, please address it to the sender rather than the list address. That will require you to use cut and paste.
Quoting small portions of a message in a reply is sometimes useful to make the reply clear, but do not quote an entire message in your reply - it just wastes resources. Technically, quoting a whole message is a copyright violation in any case. Quoting small excerpts in a reply probably falls under the fair use principle.
If your reply is on a topic different than the original message, edit the Subject: field to show that.
Disagreements about almost anything in a message are to be expected, and lively discussion is great if it is productive and positive. However, please don't be nasty or sarcastic or call people names, unless they are nice names.
II. USING THE LIST
The TabletWeaving mailing list is operated by Majordomo software. Most of your communication will be with software, not a human. As with most software, Majordomo wants things by its rules, and no way else. Majordomo supports users who receive (1) individual messages or (2) groups of messages called Digests. You can choose which you prefer. You can even receive both if that is what you want.
You communicate with Majordomo by sending commands by e-mail
to majordomo@crafter.org. Note the following.
a) Commands and the address are not case sensitive. I will
use all caps below just for ease of reading. You don't have
to do that.
b) The Subject: field can be left blank with the commands
below, or anything can be put there. Majordomo will ignore
it..
c) Commands are listed in the message area. After your
command(s) there should be no more text. If your mailer
automatically adds a signature or other characters at the end
of your message, place the word END on the last line of your
commands.
---To subscribe: send e-mail to majordomo@crafter.org
with the words:
SUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING
END
in the message area. You do not need to include your name or
e-mail address. You must subscribe for yourself with the e-
mail coming from the e-mail address to which you want
TabletWeaving mail to be sent. This kind of subscription
will get you individual list messages, sent as received.
---To subscribe to the DIGEST send e-mail to
majordomo@crafter.org with the words:
SUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING-DIGEST
END
in the message area. You do not need to include your name or
e-mail address. You must subscribe for yourself with the e-
mail coming from the e-mail address to which you want
TabletWeaving mail to be sent. Be sure to include the hyphen
between tabletweaving and digest. This kind of subscription
will get you a group of messages sent as a single message
with a table of contents. Depending on the number of
messages, a digest may be daily or more or less frequent.
---To unsubscribe to either style send e-mail to
majordomo@crafter.org with the words:
UNSUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING
END
or to majordomo@crafter.org with the words:
UNSUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING-DIGEST
END
in the message area. You do not need to include your name or
e-mail address. You must unsubscribe with e-mail coming from
the e-mail address from which you originally subscribed. If
you are unable to do that send e-mail to owner-tabletweaving@crafter.org and the list owner will make the desired
changes. Please send both old and new addresses, and indiscate whether you are subscribed to plain tabletweaving or tabletweaving-digest, Do NOT send unsubscribe or any other Majordomo
commands to the list address. Such messages will
automatically bounce back to you.
Note: If you are going to be away for an extended time, and no one is getting your e-mail, please unsubscribe before you leave, and then subscribe again when you return. This will avoid having your mail bounce back and potentially causing problems for the whole list. If you are *certain* that your mailbox has space for all the email that you will receive from this and other mailing lists, then feel free to remain subscribed during your absence from your computer.
You can combine commands. For example, if you want to change
from individual messages to the Digest format, send e-mail to
majordomo@crafter.org with the words
UNSUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING
SUBSCRIBE TABLETWEAVING-DIGEST
END
in the message area.
---To send e-mail to ALL the members of the list just address e-
mail to tabletweaving@crafter.org
Do NOT send to both
addresses, because then your message will bounce. In other words
*never* send mail to tabletweaving-digest@crafter.org
To communicate with the list owner send e-mail to: twmom@rbparker.com or owner-tabletweaving@crafter.org
III. ADVANCED TIPS
---To receive a current copy of this Information File send email to majordomo@crafter.org with these words
in the message area:
INFO TABLETWEAVING
END
---To receive a list of major commands recognized by
Majordomo send e-mail to majordomo@crafter.org with the words:
HELP
END
in the message area.
IV. ARCHIVES
You can get a list of archives available at majordomo@crafter.org by sending email there with the message
index tabletweaving
which will get you a list of the archive files available - by month. A sample looks like this.
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 39475 Oct 30 08:48 tabletweaving.archive.0010
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 66962 Nov 30 23:19 tabletweaving.archive.0011
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 2870 Dec 1 00:02 tabletweaving.archive.0012
If you wanted to have the archive for November 2000 emailed to you, you would send
get tabletweaving tabletweaving.archive.0011
to
or, for the digest version send to majordomo@crafter.org
index tabletweaving-digest
which will get you a list of the digest archives available - by digest number (which is not monthly, but by size or time period, whichever comes first). A sample looks like this.
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 10661 May 4 2000 v2000.n076
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 10370 May 8 2000 v2000.n077
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom daemon 11231 May 9 2000 v2000.n078
If you wanted to have digest #77 for year 2000 emailed to you, you would send
get tabletweaving-digest v2000.n77
to
You can combine the requests if you like. Email to majordomo@crafter.org with the message
get tabletweaving tabletweaving.archive.0011
get tabletweaving-digest v2000.n77
end
which would have both archive files sent to you. You can have as many 'get' lines as you wish. Put the 'end' or 'END' at the bottom of the list as a precaution against your mailer automatically adding something that would confuse poor Majordomo
So, we can thank Carol Wang our host for making these archives available. This is a much better archive than offered by most Majordomo hosts. Incidentally, the archives, like any Tabletweaving email, are available only to subscribers to make it a little harder for spammers to get your email address.
**Important Note: There is a very nice newer (started in 2001) archive of the individual messages (not digests) at Mail-Archive. . To access the archive you can use either of two URLs.
Old email by date http://www.mail-archive.com/tabletweaving%40crafter.org/maillist.html
Old email by subject thread http://www.mail-archive.com/tabletweaving%40crafter.org/index.html
Click on Thread Index to toggle to Date Index and vice versa. Mail-Archive is a labor of love by Jeff Breidenbach,
IMPORTANT! Because of the way all of the above work, it becomes essential that you all pay close attention to the Subject: entry of all your email. If you just reply to a message, and don't change the subject, but do change what you are writing about, your email will be associated with others when it shouldn't be.
If you have any comments, complaints, suggestions or questions with respect to the list and its operation, please contact your faithful list owner Ron Parker at:
owner-tabletweaving@crafter.org or rbparker@swipnet.se
