A detail of paintings on the ceiling of Härkeberga Church in the countryside
northwest of Stockholm.
The painter was Albertus Pictor
(Albert Målare)
ca.1440-1509,
who as well as a painter, was a highly-skilled embroiderer.
Like so many artists, he also had a creative sense of humor *.
Here is poor Eve having to spin to make clothing for herself and Adam after being thrown
out of the
Garden of Eden for eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.
She is using
a big
distaff, full of probably wool or flax, and spinning it with a drop spindle.
Needless
to say,
that was not the style of spinning or clothing in Genesis times, but is
a
representation of what spinners did and wore in the late 15th century, from Albertus
Pictors's personal observations. Eve's dress was red originally, as were her cheeks.
before chemical reactions over the centuries changed the color to the present black
