Darkfall Unofficial FAQ

Prestige Classes

Classes
Darkfall has sort of 2 kind of major classes, a "Free template" and "Prestige classes". Games like UO, AC etc that didnt have classes ended up with character templates, a determined set of skills that players picked and later just called something. A template or class due to lack of a better word since this is an already well established one, I selected this to describe the no-classes class.

Free template
Free templates are character that does not have a determined set of skills. The player can themself select whichever skill combination they want to have and start training in them, can name your template anything you like.

Prestige Classes

Quote:
Quote (----): Prestige classes are special classes, like Paladin, Assassin, Gladiator, Enchanter etc. and it’s an optional path that you may choose for your character to follow. Picking a prestige class will in most cases give you a few special skills, a few special spells, and you will have a certain status. There are limitations, tradeoffs and restrictions playing a prestige class character. Prestige classes may be interesting to some players, and some classes may give you an extra reason to role-play, or maybe give you an edge in combat or crafting. There will be many interesting prestige classes for you to try out. Picking a prestige class is not final - you can change class later, with some minor penalties. The easy route would have been to make picking a prestige class final, but we want to keep Darkfall as open ended as possible. Some Prestigue Classes will give you real good bonuses, others may only have minor bonuses and a cool sounding name. A general rule however, is that the more bonuses you get, the more tradeoffs there are.....prohibited from certain items due to the class
Skill cap
Quote:
Quote (---): You will be able to pick from about 95% of the skills, and there is no limit to how many skills you can learn. The exact cost of learning skills is yet to be determined (obviously a game balance issue), but we expect to make skills cost money. Some skills will require you to solve quests, some will only be tough to you by NPCs in remote and hard to find places, etc. And the 5% skills you wont be able to learn is race specific skills, and prestige class skills. Ok I said too much already, don’t be asking me about prestige classes please - I know we said no classes =P
This if could find the actual referrer, points to the fact that skills in prestige class lines, can or might be selectable by a player but a prestige class character can become better in it.
Note: This is very old information, from a very old post. Can read some more here, not sure if this is still valid : http://totalmadownage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1050

Known Prestige classes and skills

Assassin

Quote:
Quote (Thanks to Wonderbrick DF-Forums for finding this quote - Claus): Their function is to kill people that are hard to kill. In order for them to succeed, they have to sneak in undetected, kill their target, and hopefully escape. Assassins are proficient at stealth, at engaging unsuspected targets, but they have limited defensive capabilities so unless they drop their target fast, they’re in big trouble.
Besides the general coolness of having the potential of assassinating hard to get to targets, there are other uses for assassins: Just a couple of examples: In sieges there are these long spell casting sessions of ritual magic that could be interrupted by the death or murder of one of the casters. As these guys would be protected, maybe an assassin could slip in undetected and get the job done. They could assassinate the healer in a group, and put a damper on this groups activities until they can get their healer back.
Don't want to say much more about assassins, other than we're going to keep things balanced and making sense where it comes to this prestige class.

Druid
Druids for example may never use metal armor after they are initiated

Enchanter
No skills found

Gladiator
No skills found

Paladin

Paladins for instance, gain the ability to Lay-Hands (instant heal) once every day.
Paladins have to give half of their earnings to their church
Extra combat skills
Handful of spells (castable penalty free while wearing armor)

Note: Well, with more then 50 prestige classes this isn't much information to go by but better then nothing
