AddressUpdate

AddressUpdate is a free utility that monitors your Mac OS X Address Book database for changes. Whenever such a change occurs, for example when editing or creating a contact, it will try to retrieve additional information about that contact from the Internet &ndash based on any given telephone number of your contact.

AddressUpdate Configuration

AddressUpdate uses two technologies called XPath and regular expressions in order to let the user customize where AddressUpdate looks for address information about a contact. XPaths and regular expressions might seems a bit complicated for the average user, and therefore AddressUpdate supports the use of configuration files. To use an AddressUpdate configuration file, just double-click it while AddressUpdate is running and that site configuration will be added to your stored sites! There are some configuration files included with AddressUpdate, and you can chose which ones suite you best. If you write your own site configurations, don't hesitate to mail them to me and I'll include them in future releases. While creating custom site configurations, this tool might be to some help when testing the configurations.

AddressUpdate Address Book Plug-In

Included in the AddressUpdate package is a plug-in for the Address Book in Mac OS X that allows you to select (or right-click) a phone number of a contact and update that manually. For those of you that have used AdresseraMera &ndash the predecessor of this plug-in &ndash this plug-in will seem very familiar. However, with the great advantage that the plug-in will use same preferences as specified for AddressUpdate, meaning that you can control where on the Internet you want to search for contacts! The plug-in could be used as before, but with AddressUpdate monitoring the Address Book for changes it is not necessary in order to fill your Address Book with address information for all your contacts.

System Requirements

The requirements for AddressUpdate is Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard. It will not work on any Mac OS version lower than that, however it might work to some extent in Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard. As the developer do not have the privilege to own an Intel-based Mac, real testing for Snow Leopard will have to be put on the (hopefully) not-so-distant future. There is, however, one thing to try in order to get Address Book plug-ins to work on Snow Leopard, and that is to start the Address Book in 32-bit mode. This is done by right-clicking on the application and selecting Show info. In the info panel, there is an option to start the application in 32-bit mode, which might load plug-ins that couldn't be loaded before.
