The Kingdom of

ZAGORIA

Rumble in Knutendorf - battle report
Played on the 19th of April 2009

On Sunday the 19th of April I arranged an introductional game for AK-47 REPUBLIC for our gaming club. The scenario was based upon Michael Murphy’s “Rumble in Moonbootsia” but was staged in my own country Zagoria. (Many thanks to Mike for providing all kind of support during the preparation)

Scene setter

Miss Vienna Dupree (aka ”The Rich Bitch”), the daughter of the American multi billionaire Lumpkin Cleaveland Startweather Dupree III is once again gone! She was last seen with her I-Pod firmly plugged into her ears humming on the old hit “A Stairway to Heaven”. Last year she managed to get involved with the Ongo-Bongo cult in Bongolesia and now rumours say that she and daddy’s credit card has shown up in the company of Reverends L Zeppelin of the “Stairway to Heaven-cult” in Knutendorf, Zagoria. (Was her I-pod manipulated in any way?)

As Daddy Dupree cares for both his daughter and his credit card he has pulled some strings for having Miss Vienna brought back to a more suitable as a spoiled Jet-set chick.

The teams

Six teams showed up for the rescue operation. Well… to be honest only five were rescuers while the sixth was there to prevent the rescue…

The teams were:

Reverend L Zeppelin. Two units of militia with small arms, RPG’s and RCL’s and one unit of two A/C’s with HMG and of course the reverend himself and Miss Dupree.

The Zagorian Army. One regular unit made up of an A/C with gun, one APC w HMG and four small arms groups on a truck.

The Zagorian Marine Corps. One regular unit with an A/C with a HMG, two Toyotas armed with HMG’s and four small arms groups.

Just to make sure that some of the rescuers are professionals, daddy Dupree had made up a contract with the famous “Wild Ducks” of Bongolesia. The Ducks showed up with four small arms groups a mortar team a couple of civilian cars and the mandatory DC-3 waiting at the airport.

Then the rather uninvited Zpetznaz team of four small arms groups of former soviet paratroopers showed up. They were on a mission in a nearby nation and managed to “recruit” a UN –marked helicopter.

The least wanted gang to join in was ZAP (Zagoriche Arbeiterpartei) the local leftwing guerrilla. They managed to scramble one T-34 tank, a truck with a AA and another truck carrying 4 militia class small arms groups.

Upon this, all teams had the chance to prior to the game select one “dirty trick” or an extra bonus to use during the game. Some tricks failed, some worked and some was never played. I will let you know as we walk through the game.

The initial deployment and the game

Right in the middle of the table was the holy house wit some surrounding BUA’s. The reverend was not allowed to leave the house until turn three so he deployed one unit in that particular template. The other unit with their RCL’s deployed in a nearby BUA thus covering two main roads leading to the holy hose.

The ducks had infiltrated the town and could start anywhere as long as they were at least 10 inches from the holy house. The other teams had to start at the edge of the playing area.

Both the Ducks and the Marines started out with full speed ahead towards the holy house. The Zpetznaz was too afraid to be shot down in their Helo so they rappelled to the ground and made a sprint for a nearby BUA. Once safe they took their time to get in any position… a good call though.

The ducks had four cars and played a wild game. All four groups was packed in one while the other was sent out as decoys. The tactics paid of as both the Army and ZAP spent several turns trying to destroy the empty cars. Add to that the fact that the army player was very unfortunate with his movement dice. The Army had to spend most of the game well away from all action and just being able to throw in one or two rounds from his A/C.

On the first turn the ducks drove up just outside of the gates to the holy house and then rushed for cover in the BUA right across the street.

On the second turn they turned really wild and crazy. On 1-2-3! they all charged across the street to engage the defending militia in close combat but luck was truly favouring the reverend.

After the firing three out of four ducks were wiped out while the defenders suffered only a pinned RCL!

The surviving Duckling was saved by the advancing marines that drew the attention from all the heavier weapons, and the fact that the reverend had made up his mind that it was time to get the hell out of there. The courageous Marines drove down a street so packed with RCL’s and RPG’s that the famous “charge of the light brigade” stands out as a family pick-nick. In a blaze both Toyotas were knocked out and only the A/C and one foot group from the Toyotas survived.

In turn five the reverend was close to victory. All he had to do was to survive for just one more turn and then he would be out on the high way… but no… a desperate round fired from the surviving marine A/C hit the fuel tank of his limo leaving the reverend laying dead on the street and miss Dupree just standing there to be picked up by any one that might come around.

Turn six filled the street of wannabe rescuers. The marine A/C skidded around the corner, the last duckling had managed to grab a car and was right behind them. The Zpetznaz, who had been sipping cappuccino with vodka in the cafés by the street , finally decided that it was time to participate. Running and firing your RPG at an A/C that is driving right by is tricky for anyone, but not to a Russian paratrooper. The A/C went up in flames and a lucky Zpetznaz managed to be the first to reach miss Dupree.

His happiness was short lived. Finally the ZAP force had made their way past the ducks dummy target and was just turning the corner. Disappointed of being too late they fired at anything they could see. The AA on the truck aimed, fired and scored! The Helicopter that was circling the area was shot down and crashed right on top of miss Dupree and her saviour. Game over…

An after action review

All six players had a good time and enjoyed both the scenario and the rules. Including introduction, the set up, playing and a short after action review, we were done in four hours. Each team had 120-130p except the L Zeppelin’s who had the double. Although the teams had very different characteristics they were judged to be of a fair size for a beginner. Six players was manageable as not all forces showed up at the gates at the same turn. I had prepared for seven players but perhaps it turned out better with one player short..

Again I would like to thank Michel Murphy, the creator of Bongolesia for allowing us to use his scenario and for all help during the planning.

I’m sure that there will be more actions in Zagoria as well.
