I have watched this show a couple of times, and the last time I felt I watched it from a more adult perspective than before. This is interesting, as it would appear I have previously watched it with a child's or a teenager's eyes - without even knowing it!
The show deals very much with emotional issues, which of course makes it interesting to watch. I also like that the show deals with children and adults on equal grounds, making the show suitable for all types of audiences.
I am impressed by the fact that we got the see the children of the show grow up,
and we follow their own individual development into adulthood. Mostly, we see
Laura (not surprisingly, I guess), but we also follow Mary and Albert. What is a
little disappointing is that when Mary, Laura and Albert start growing up, we
don't see Carrie and Grace in the same way we earlier saw Mary and Laura. This
is a pity, because when Mary and Laura are somewhat grown up, Carrie would be
about the same age Laura was when the show started. It really would have been
nice and interesting to see more Carrie-focused storylines - you don't really
get to know her character very well - and more of Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush's
acting. These talented young girls really didn't get a chance to show what they
could have done with the part!
This means that we don't get the same mix of
childhood and adulthood we saw in earlier episodes either. Youngsters James and
Cassandra enter the show fairly late, but the focus is still more on the adults.
As for favourite characters: Laura is my number one favourite, but there are so
much I like about the other characters as well; Charles is very kind and
righteous, although somewhat stubborn, and so is Caroline, even though her
temper sometimes surprises everybody, herself included. Mary is very patient and
responsible, and Carrie is just about the cutest thing you've ever seen! Of
course, there are lots of other characters I really enjoy watching, such as Mr.
Edwards, Mr. Hanson, Dr. Baker, the entire Oleson family is hilarious ... I
guess I could go on for quite a long time :-)
I like a lot of the episodes of the show, but if I had to choose just one
favourite, it'd have to be "The Lord Is My Shepherd". The storyline is wonderful
and Melissa Gilbert performs excellently!
