Fly fishing in Jaurekaska 2004

It was in the end of June that Michael, myself, and Janne from Sundsvall went away up to the streams of Jaurekaska to fish. We tried to fish in a little stream in Arjeplog the weekend before, with little success and the longing for the mountains, streams and big Graylings was big. It was a long drive from Luleå thru the village of Jokkmokk and into the mountains in the Big Luleå River valley with the big hydroelectrical plants in Porjus and Harsprånget.

Jaurekaska streams and German fishermen

When we stopped at a lake with crystal clear water, where the fish was rising. I was inclined to stay and fish this beautiful little lake but I went with my buddies to the streams where the big Graylings rise under the Midsummer sun.

When we arrived at Jaurekaska there were a German camper with some fisherman that was fishing with spinners for the big trout that sometimes goes up into the streams from the big Lakes Langas and Stora Lulevatten. This is wery big trout up to 20 pounds or more.

It was a bit difficult to figure out what fly to put on the tippet but after first Grayling the fly fishing was very good. I was able to put four graylings into my bag, but I lost a good trout and two Graylings in the rapids. I got the fish on a beige Klinkhammer in the middle of the rapids and on a dark sedge fly (caddis fly) in the beginning of the stream above the rapids.

My friends also got some fish. It was a nice evening with very good fishing that was night when we stopped fishing. We walked back to the car, where the Germans where sleeping in there camper. The drive back to Luleå was a long and tiresome drive thru the big forests. With the midsummer sun shining down at us, as it never goes down in the summer, in this part of Sweden.
