Projects

(Jan 2009 - Aug 2009) Participated in BTJ's work related to the Dewey Decimal Classification system, DDC.

(2006 - 2008) Member of the Editorial Committee for Indexing of Fiction within the Swedish Library Association (click on Indexering in the left menue bar).

(Jan 2005 - Jan 2008) Participated and was local project manager at BTJ for a project called Library Information Visualization & Analysis (LIVA). The goal of the project was to bring competitive functionality in terms of language technology, automatic classification research, information retrieval (IR) and information visualization to library systems. The project's definition of library systems included integrated library systems with Web 2.0 inspired user interfaces, OPACs, union catalogues etc. LIVA generated principles and tested solutions in four main areas: (i) automatic indexing, (ii) automatic categorization (classification and clustering), (iii) information retrieval and (iv) information visualization. The project was supported by the Knowledge Foundation and had the following partners: The Swedish School of Library and Information Science (click on Library & information Science/Bibliotekshögskolan in the bottom of the page) at Göteborg University and Högskolan i Borås, Bibliotekscentrum and BTJ. For more information, please see the final project report

(May 2003 - Dec 2005) I managed a major revision of BTJ's indexing of fiction. The work includes a detailed review where I compared our own thesauri with those created within the Swedish Library Association. The vocabularies were analysed with respect to the number and structure of subject headings as well as the word stems and frequencies. I also managed a number of investigations regarding vocabulary use, indexing depth and customer requirements. The work was completed during 2005. The implementation includes an extensive retrospective revision of bibliographical records. Libraries subscribing to Bibliographic service and their users will be able to search using the Swedish Library Association's term lists for children's literature as well as for fiction for adults. The lists used are now maintained by the Editorial Committee for Indexing of Fiction within the Swedish Library Association (click on Indexering in the left menue bar).

(Jan - Sept 2004) BTJ revised its search service BURK-sök®. I worked within a group that developed a browseable and hierarchical subject structure called Trädsök (Tree searching) based on, but not a direct visualization of, the Swedish classification system, SAB. Trädsök is one of the search screens in BTJ's bibliographic database BURK-sök. In "Trädsök" classification codes are extended with supplementary notations (e g for location, time period, content and form) and different combinations of searches from more than one classification code. The tree is an alternative way to search in BURK-sök and primarily developed to be an aid for end users to search and navigate by subject. The structure comprises non-fiction for adults and consists of 14 top levels from which you can navigate and refine a subject searching from a general topic to more specific aspects of that topic.

(Jan 2002 - Mar 2003) Together with Lund Public Library, I have been working in a project, in which we have developed a model for a digital national reference service. Library patrons should be able to ask reference questions and get answers in real time.

(Sept 2001 - April 2002) I participated in the development of a Z39.50 based method simplifying the import of bibliographic records into local library OPACs which ensures a satisfactory bibliographic service. The method was commissioned by the Bibliographic Center within BTJ.

(April - Sept 2001) In collaboration between BTJ, Axiell BOOK-IT and Lund Public Library. I participated in the specification and coding (in XML) of a clickable subject tree, "Träd in", for subject search in the Children's Catalogue in the local OPAC. The structure contains hierarchical levels. Behind the levels are predefined search strings where subject headings, from a thesaurus, are combined using boolean logic. "Träd in" is one of the components in the Axiell BOOK-IT kids OPAC for children in the age of 7-13 years.

(Mar 2001 - April 2002) Participating in long-term activities concerning indexing of fiction, structural design of vocabularies for that purpose and the interoperability between such vocabularies.

(April 1995 - Aug 2000) Project manager at NetLab and responsible for management and further development of Länkskafferiet (The Link Larder). Länkskafferiet is a search- and browseable database which contains assessed web pages useful for pupils in the Swedish school. It's developed and hosted by the The Swedish National Agency for Education.

(Jan - Aug 2000) In The European Treasury Browser (ETB) I was working with the specification of the semantics of a metadata element set which should function as the least common denominator for an exchange of records between quality link collections within the European school sector.

(Jan - Aug 2000) Project leader for Skånewebben (The Skåne Web), a subject based information gateway for information on the province of Scania, a Regional Information Service (RIS) project. The service was closed in December 2006.

(Jan 1998 - Feb 2000 ) WP leader for WP 1 (Meta data structure and Technical platform) and WP 2 (European Link Treasury, ELT) in The European Universal Classroom (EUC) project, funded by ISPO. Further information.

(Jan 1998 - Dec 1999) Working, and task leader, within two of the technical WPs within in the European Schoolnet Initiative (EUN) concerning metadata and robot based search services.

Pedagogical activities

(June 2008 - Aug 2009) The Swedish School of Library and Information Science developed a new Master program "Digital Services" in collaboration with The National Library of Sweden, Gothenburg Public Library, BTJ and other partners. I represented BTJ in the project's steering group. See Master i B&I: Digitala tjänster - kultur, information & kommunikation.

(2004-2005) Coordinating courses about advanced Internet searching arranged by BTJ and teaching quality assessment and evaluation of Internet resources in those courses.

(2001 - 2004) BIVIL (LIS programme at Lund university, Sweden): Subject based information gateways, quality assessment, children's information searching etc: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004.

(1998 - Aug 2000) I have taught and arranged courses on information searching and quality assessment for teachers, school librarians, school policy making staff. -- These used to be half or whole days courses commissioned by local and regional school authorities.

(1996-1997) I coordinated all user training at UB2. The courses where arranged upon demand. University teachers contacted us and we designed courses suitable for their students.

(1995-1997) I worked with user training at UB2 (the University Library's department of Science, Technology and Medicine).

(1986-1991) Taught information searching to pupils at St Petri läroverk (an upper secondary school) as part of my position there.

(1986-1987) Taught catalogue use at Malmö School of Teacher Education.

(1985-1986) Worked within a program for promoting reading for enjoyment among pupils in primary schools in Malmö.

Other activities

(2001 - 2006) Board Member, Swedish Library Association, Skåne Region

(Jan - June 2000) Member of the reference group for "Kolla Källan", a project within the Swedish Schoolnet.

(May 1999 - June 2000) Member of the reference group for "Lenkesamling med svartjeneste og prosjektveiledning", a project within the Norwegian Schoolnet.
