'vive la différence!'
eggstone have never
before been more curious and eager to follow their own melodies to the
end of the world. it's rare to find a pop album where the songs are
filled with so many chords as 'vive la différence!'. but eggstone
prove that knowledge and disciplined intellectualism can be as
important to great pop as dumb and horny teenage neurosis. on this
album, there is not one thought or theory without emotional backing.
eggstone don't make music with their hearts or their heads, they play
on the fine strings in between."
[...]
with 'vive la différence!', eggstone deliver their most colourful and
fascinating peep show yet. the changes from slender semi-accoustics
('april and may', 'supermeaningfectlyless'), to symphonic powerpop
('head around', 'still all stands still' and the single 'never been a
better day') often takes place within the same song. sometimes, in
songs like the grand 'marabous' and 'taramasalata', you get a notion
of the cardigans. but eggstone feel remarkably older and more
experienced. they've simply had more time to peel off more layers, and
reach greater depths.
perhaps this is what the cardigans will sound like in five years.
