Finally... the World Cup is over
Screw soccer, until EM 2008 I don't have to worry about it! Nor does my liver... I think the World Cup is to beer sales in Europe as Halloween is to candy in the US.My suggestions are simple:
1. Keep actual time (which may be more like 35-40 minutes than 45... with stops for injuries (real or otherwise), player change, cards, corners, PKs and goal kicks, but not for things like throw ins or penalties where there is no attempt on goal or setting up of players. I watch the US Ghana play five minutes of extra time where Ghana had 2 minutes of injuries and a substitution. Whistle blew promptly after 5 minutes anyway!?!?
2. Though keeping time will reduce some of the longer fakes, my first real exposure to soccer made me realize that this BS dominates the game. I know NBA guys take a dive now and then, but every bodily contact in soccer is seen as a chance to remove a player from the field and it's appalling. Where's the machisimo? The absolute stop to this is a post-game review where judges can give yellow cards or half-yellow cards to plays who fake injury.
3. I also think they need another referee to avoid the cheating scandals... that one guy has WAY too much influence over the other 22 guys on the field and the 400,000 people with bets on th game.
4. They should get instant replay, but the replay should only be used like in hockey (ie, goal or not) and the calls should be made in the booth, none of this running to the sideline, etc.
As for PKs, that's more a part of the sport as it was meant to be. Sure the idea of removing players is cool, but the suggestions I have wouldn't change the sport, just rid it of some of the BS.
