LIVING WITH STARGARDTS DISEASE

Denis' Story

I have been reading, with great interest, the stories of people dealing with Stargardts disease and feel it would be good to tell my story. I am 30 years old and live in Cincinnati, Oh. I was diagnosed with Stargardts at 12 and have made a career of "covering up" the fact that I had anything wrong with me.

The disease really affacted my social life, especially dating since it is still the accepted norm that the man drive on these situations. This has been the most difficult thing to deal with. However I have not been a hermit and even came close to marriage.

I loved college so much that I decided to stay for a masters in history. Achieving this goal I realized that it is not a very marketable skill so I decided to pursue a career in something everyone with limited vision should do, librarianship. I am currently a librarian at the History and Genealogy department at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
