Menthality
A Finnish spitz is, like most other dogs, an active dog that needs a lot of physical and and mental stimulation. Since it is a typical hunting dog, it feels happiest if it has the possibility to hunt on a regularly basis, but it is also interested of other activites which involves both brain and muscles.
The Finnish spitz is very teachable, but this quality could also be a bad thing since the breed also is quick to learn improper things too. Despite its teachability, you can not learn a Finnish spitz anything you like since its independence and self-confidence makes it reluctant to learn "unnecessary" things or do things just to make its owner happy. In other words; a Finnish spitz is not an animal that is well suited to perform at a cirkus but a dog that wants to make its own decisions about when and how to do things. This is a very good quality for huntings dogs.
A Finnish spitz is often very caring about its human "pack" and can for this reason be somewhat of a one-family-dog or a one-man-dog even if strangers can be appreciated for shorter periods of time.
The breed is known to be very talkitative and they have indeed very easy to bark and howl but this does not mean that you can not teach a Finnish spitz to be quite, i.e. indoors. When it comes to Sissi we have teached her to talk loud outdoors; indoors she have to keep a conversational tone"
