Hunting

The Finnish spitz is a typical hunting dog. It belongs to the group barking bird dogs which means that the dog finds forest birds (black grouse, capercailzies etc) and while the bird in the tree concentrates on the intensesive barking dog, the hunter creeps within shooting range.

This breed was also used to hunt squirrel; a characteristic that probably played an important role during the time when trappers could earn his living by selling squirrel fur.

Even if forest birds are the specialty of the breed, it is not unusuall to use Finnish spitz to hunt other types of prey to, i.e. elk.
