Already in September, 1942, ABA had requested permission to

acquire two Douglas C-54/DC-4s to open a route via Scotland

to the U.S. However, this was regarded as a politically

sensitive issue and on the initiative of the Swedish government

the privately financed SILA -- Svensk Interkontinental Lufttrafik AB --

was established. Per Norlin became the first head of SILA

and a few days later he was once more on his way to the U.S.

On November 25, 1943 he signed a contract with Douglas for the purchase

of 10 DC-4s, but deliveries could not start before the end of the war.

In the spring of 1946, the Flying Fortresses were replaced

by newly delivered Douglas DC-4s. In the meantime,

the negotiations about a joint, Scandinavian airline had been resumed.

At the first meeting during fall 1945, a name was agreed upon

After only one year there was daily service with the aircraft usually filled to capacity.

1947 The DC-4 “Rolf Viking” with ICAO delegates onboard

is the first SAS aircraft to land at Montreal.

SAS’s 5000th passenger on the North Atlantic route

leaves Stockholm on the DC-4 “Haakon Viking” 1947. American tourists invade Europe.

SAS’s eastbound flights sold out.

But in 1949 the story of DC4 to NY was over and the Douglas DC6 took the job.

However the DC4 continue on shorter routes in Scandinavia and Europe.
