Since I ride 90% of my time at the racetrack it made a lot of sense to buy a "real" race bike. It had to be an RD of course and in 1998 I eventually bought one.
Why an RD then?
The main reason is that they are cheap! That's a reason good enough for me. You shall be able to find a nice RD-racer for around 7000-10000 SEK. It is also much "more fun" to crash a bike that costs as much as an exhaust system on a modern bike! Because you will crash...
And Yamaha has always been very special to me, so I have sentimental reasons too!
(It has to do with my moped - a Yamaha FS1DX-79 - that didn't go any faster than 23 km/h. And that is s l o w, especially with four gears and front disc brake! Then I found out that the exhaust port was completely clogged! After I cleaned it it topped at 43 km/h! Those were the days of simple pleasures!:-) )
And of course, two-stroke engines are genious! They pollute a lot but since a race bike almost always operates at full throttle the exhaust is tuned to take advantage of every little bit of fuel. Hence it doesn't pollute as much as one might suspect.
So here is some background about my first RD racer I bought in 1998. First racer ? Yes, I couldn't help buying a second one in 1999, since the costs for repairing the first one would be too much. And it is always good to have spare parts!
In Linköping we practise at the local racetrack Sviestad. This is one of the most versatile motorsport arenas in Sweden. LMS - Linköpings Motor Sällskap has a section for just about everything (except dragracing I think)
