I have always been nuts about motorcycles, but I didn't get a driver's license until I was 32 (I'm older now...). But now I got it and what do I do with it? Almost nothing! I ride more at the local racetrack Sviestad than on the public roads. And to use the racetrack you don't even need a driver's license! I have also invested in a racebike (two actually...or three... take a look at my garage!), which is a lot of fun!

My first bike

In late1996 I bought a Yamaha RD350LC-86 (always wanted one of those!) and a great page for RD fans is this one by Alek Hayes.

10 minutes before first crash... This is me and my bike the first day I rode it. I am just about to leave after having a cup of coffe with some friends. 10 minutes after this picture was taken the bike is lying in a ditch quite badly damaged. But it sure looks good now! ;-)

The RD is a two-stroke 350 cc parallel twin and was very popular at racetracks due mainly to its engine that is very reliable (if you don't over rev it). In Sweden it was also very popular as a street bike until the new insurance policies came around. The old system used cylinder volume and that made the RD belong to the cheapest class (< 400 cc). The new system uses the weight to horsepower ratio to classify the bike. This made the RD very expensive to insure and the prices dropped. I had a neighbour who bought one for 5000 SEK, used it one summer, changed tires and sold it for 10000 SEK...

So the keyword here is cheap thrills! It has 63 hp and weighs about 159 kg.

I sold this bike in December 2000 to one of my best friends (he's the guy I had coffe with on the image above by the way) so now it will get more trashing at Sviestad with him on it. He also had a very nice RD350-86 but he sold it to his father who is 67 years old! I hope to see them both on the track next year! Can't wait for that! :-)

Some RD's don't run as well as mine did, read this story (not suitable for RD fanatics by the way ;-)) but remember, it's an exception!

Anyway my bike used to look exactly like this but after some biological excursions it does not anymore, hrrm...
