Maps on Finland

Here you will find some maps showing the situation along the Swedish - Russian border in the late 18th and early 19th century. I have scanned the pictures from the "Sveriges krig 1808-09" published by the Swedish General staff Historical department (1895-1920).

Southern Finland in the early 18-hundreds

This is a map showing the situation in southern Finland with focus on the Swedish side. The darker areas marks where the density of the population were equal or higher then 4 individuals/sq kilometre. If you have good eyes you will note that there are distance figures (in km) on most roads.

Map over the Kymmene river area, Finland

This map shows the southern part of the Swedish-Russian border in the period of 1743-1809. The Border runs along the Kymmene river in Southern Finland. It was in this area that most of the campaigns during the 1788-90 war took place. The image is scanned from one of the maps included in the Swedish General staff series "Sveriges krig 1808-1809". It's in the scale 1:500 000 (I hope)

Map over the southern part of Savolax and the north-western part of the Russian Finland in 1743-1809

This map shows the part of the 1743-1809 Swedish-Russian border that run through lake area of Savolax and Carelia. In this woodland area the campaigning were performed with much smaller units and the battles concentrated along the roads. Here the Linear tactics proved inferior to a massive use of light infantry and jaegers. The image is scanned from one of the maps included in the Swedish General staff series "Sveriges krig 1808-1809". It's in the scale 1:500 000 (I hope)

Map over the southern part of Carelia, (the Viborg and St Petersburg area)

This map shows the area where the Swedish troops made a landing in 1790 and tried to advance on St Petersburg. This is also the scene of the naval battle at Viborg where the entire Swedish fleet with the King and half of the Swedish army onboard managed to escape from the Russian blockade. The image is scanned from one of the maps included in the Swedish General staff series "Sveriges krig 1808-1809". It's in the scale 1:500 000 (I hope)
