I visited CCPI this week and discussed their
plans for TC cable manufacturing. Please see below my report. CCPI's expertise
on thermocouples is in the UK and so this is why I am involved.
If it proceeds further, perhaps you could
visit if you do come to the UK.
They would like to know the following questions
to start the ball rolling. Can you advise with your experience of this
application? I think they want to make very high end cable for aerospace
industry and so need the very best we can produce.
1. Can we supply tighter tolerance than class 1
ASTM E230 ?
2. If yes, what consequences would this have to
price, availability, quantities etc?
3. What are the most efficient, cost effective
order quantities and spool types ?

Whilst I was on holiday CCPI contacted the
office and we quoted for 500 kgs of K Type 0.813mm. A sample was requested and I
delivered this to determine the true requirements. CCPI, I realised on arrival,
are Consolidated Ceramics which we used to supply straight lengths of T/C wire
in the early Driver Harris days. They are still a Heating Systems customer using
elements and tubes in their furnace applications..
CCPI are the UK subsiduary of USA parent
company. Originally, Consolidated Ceramics were a UK agent manufacturing ceramic
coated alloys for the aerospace industry. Fred Knight, the then owner, developed
the temperature sensing business and it is now this sector which dominates the
activities even in the States. CCPI in Sheffield is the group centre of
excellence and run this division still mainly in the aerospace industry. MI
cable is the main component.
CCPI have bought a cable manufacturing company
in the States and as a result now have thermocouple cable facility. On further
investigation, this is The Able Wire Company of Naugatuck, Connecticut (Not far
from Bethal ?). This company is said to use mainly German wire and manufactures
standard cable. I gather that this company is not efficiently run and described
as a "Ma and Pa" operation (does that mean family run !). CCPI, Sheffield, are
tasked with modernising the products produced, improve quality and tolerance in
order to enter the high end aerospace market. This new division will now be
called CCPI-Wire & Sensors.
Therefore, their first step has been to
identify quality wire producers and thus this contact. I explained Kanthal's
position and TC products and also mentioned that we had a production facility in
the States. As mentioned, CCPI are running this from the UK and therefore want
to develop a relationship with Kanthal Limited. Any progress turning into orders
can in theory be supplied to and invoiced into the UK. Long term, I would think
the most efficient supply route would be established.
CCPI have said straight a way that they will be
a difficult customer because they are looking for very low tolerance within the
matched pairs, within the spool ends and drift. They need USA ASTM E230 as a
minimum and would like to know what we can offer over and above this. They have
a lab in Sheffield where they can analyse EMF values and they are comparing the
sample supplied. A new lab will also be installed at Able.
True potential is unknown but it is the
intention to be placing orders in the tonnes. Their ambition is to be a major
producer/stockist of TC cable and they mentioned demands of million metres here
and a million metres there. I now think that, whilst investigating the UK
market, it was CCPI who contacted Stork pushing Able's K Type 0.711's. If so,
there maybe a cross over of business that we are already doing with UK cable
manufacturers, Polux, IMI, Heatsense, SK ! I would suggest that they would want
to supply the big runners as well as aerospace. Therefore, we do not want pull
the rug from under our own feet with prospect of any eventual sales going
through Kanthal Inc however far off this seems now. Perhaps we should target the
high spec material only.
CCPI have invested in a new facility in
Sheffield, have a subsiduary in Bahrain run from UK and it was suggested have
money to invest.
