Vorkosigan ComConsole Net Surfer

Skin for MS Internet Explorer 5 and 6 (ver. 4.0)

All Bujold fans have surely waited for this, a rebranded and reskinned version of MS Internet Explorer with a "Vorkosigan" look.

To install this skin you need to download and install three freeware "helper" programs. So the reskinning is a little complicated, but it is not very difficult.

New There are now two different background images to choose between.

You can get the "rebranding" effect, with "Vorkosigan ComConsole" in the title bar.

This reskinning has been tested with MSIE 5 on Windows NT, and with MSIE 6 on Windows ME. Hopefully it will also work with other Windows versions.

Instructions MS Internet Explorer 5 and 6:

  1. Download the file vkcc40ie.zip and "unzip" it to a temporary folder. There should be 4 files:
    • "vkcc3.ico", a Vorkosigan ComConsole icon (image)
    • "vkcc3bkg.bmp", a Vorkosigan-inspired background (image)
    • "vkcc4bkg.bmp", a Vorkosigan-inspired background (image)
    • "vkcc20bt.ico", a Nexus button for the Internet Explorer toolbar (image)
  2. These files will be used to make your MS Internet Explorer into a Vorkosigan ComConsole.

 A: Installing the background:

  1. Go to http://downloads.anonymous-software.com/, click on "Freware files", then on "IE Tools XP", then on the "Download file" icon to download the file "ietools.zip". (Or get it here)
  2. Unzip the file "ietools.zip" to a suitable folder, for example "C:\Program files\ietools\".
  3. Move the files "vkcc3bkg.bmp" and "vkcc4bkg.bmp" from the temporary folder to this ietools program folder.
  4. When this is done, go to the ietools program folder and double-click on the "IEToolbar.exe" program icon.
  5. In the IE Tools XP program window (image) click on the "..." button to find the "vkcc3bkg.bmp" or "vkcc4bkg.bmp" background image.
  6. If you want the background image to be used also in Explorer, check the checkbox "Also Apply to Explorer".
  7. Click "Apply Changes".
  8. Close IE Tools XP by clicking on the "X" button, and when you start MS Internet Explorer it will have the Vorkosigan background.

 B: Installing the Nexus button:

  1. Download the program "Internet Explorer Toolbar Add Button" from http://home.drenik.net/pjsoft/download/ieaddtoolbtn.exe and install the program by double-clicking on the downloaded exe file.
  2. No icon will be created for the program, so start it by going to the ieaddbutton program folder, usually "C:\Program files\pjsoft\ieaddbutton\", and doubleclick on the "iebtns.exe" program icon.
  3. In the field "Main button information" enter Button Text: "Nexus", Tools Menu Text: "The Bujold Nexus", Status Bar Text: " Go to the Bujold Nexus", and Action on click: "http://www.dendarii.com/" (See image: large small).
  4. In the field "Choose desired 32x32 icon" click on "Select icon from disk" and navigate to the temporary folder and select the icon "vkcc20bt.ico".
  5. In the field "Add NOW this button to Internet Explorer toolbar" make sure that the checkbox in front of "Add NOW..." is checked, and then click on a button number in the listbox. Choose the number with the first "-- separator --" label.
  6. Click the button "Click to make NEW IE button", and then close the Internet Explorer Toolbar Add Button program.
  7. When you start MS Internet Explorer the Nexus button should be on the toolbar.
  8. If you want to move the Nexus button on the toolbar, right-click somewhere in the toolbar, choose "Customize..." and in the dialog box that appears, find the Nexus button in the listbox to the right, highlight it and move it up or down in the list with the "Move up" and "Move down"buttons.
  9. If you didn't get things right, start the "Add Button" program again, click on "Nexus" in the list to the right and click on the "Edit button info" button if you want to make some small changes, click on "Delete button" if you want to start over.

  10. The program "Internet Explorer Toolbar Add Button" does not seem to work with Windows NT. Perhaps you need to be logged in as Administrator?
You can instead go to http://www.harmonyhollow.net/aab.shtml and download and install the program AddaButton. With this program use "vkcc3.ico" instead of "vkcc20bt.ico" as button image, and notice that you will not get the same effect with a greyscale normal button and a colored active one.

 C: "Branding" the browser:

  1. Download the program "IE Title Modifier 1" from http://www.apeshit.btinternet.co.uk/files/setup.zip. (Or get it here)
  2. Unzip the downloaded zip file to a suitable folder, for example "C:\Program files\titlemod\", and start the program by double-clicking on the "IE Title Modifier.exe" program icon.
  3. In the IE Title Modifier program window (image), enter the text you want, for example "Vorkosigan ComConsole [MSIE 6]".
  4. Click on the "Modify" button, a dialog "Success! - Title changed" will pop up, click on the "OK" button, and close the IE Title Modifier program window.
  5. You can now restart your Vorkosigan ComConsole (MSIE), and it should now be branded as "Vorkosigan ComConsole".

If you know of a simpler way to re-skin MS Internet explorer, all tips are welcome to bo@dendarii.com

One alternative is to use Xtex X-Setup to make these three changes. Download and start the program, then go to Internet/Internet Explorer/Appearance/ and use the plugins "Picture Options", "Toolbar buttons" and "Window Title".
