This year I concentrated my efforts on the SMFF-areas around Mölndal and Göteborg. In total I made 112 separate ones. Serveral I had made during previous years, but a few were new for me. As usual I have been using my trusty old ATS-4b. Putting out about 4 watts it is in my opinion the best small portable rig for CW only there is. Provided that your antenna is enough high and in the clear the power is quite enough to make reliable contacts all over the nordic countries, Poland, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Northern France and the UK on 40 and 80 meters. I have been using the ATS-4b now for a couple of years and the rig has not failed me once. Something quite amazing considering all the different conditions and abuse it has sustained.
As for my antenna, it is still an end fed half-wave for 40 meters with a 40-meter trap at the end and another 11 meters of wire after that to make it work on 80 meters. Of course a full 40 meter wire would work as well, but the inductive load of the trap make the whole antenna a bit shorter, which make it a bit easier to fit in tight spots. The mast is the usual 15 meter fiber glass pole from DX-Wire with the three top three elements removed. This mast is, in my humble opinion, the best compromize between portability and sturdiness on the market. There are indeed more “heavy duty” options and there are more “light weight” ones, but the one form DX-Wire is the best compromize between the two.
