What is PDM?

PDM is an acronym and is short for Product Data Management. It concerns information handling with focus upon products developed industrially. There are many commercially available systems today, both nationally and internationally developed systems. Most "PDM" systems are developed to solve some parts of what PDM stands for today.

My own general definition of PDM:

PDM is an acronym. PDM covers standard systems handling product information within manufacturing companies.
A mature PDM system protects and controls all information
during the products "full" life cycle.

Some advantages with PDM:

• Shorter product lead-time = TTM, Time To Market and/or TTC Time To Customer
• "Higher recycling" of earlier developed material, documentation, models, software e.g..
• Better quality of information, fewer rewritings of documents and better work flow
• Planning and follow up of projects, products is facilitated
